This software was one of the first Artificial Intelligence computer systems developed for PC Computers.  It was based on the Texas Instruments "Personal Consultant" software development environment.  It was created in 1986, and thus is no longer current.  The database contains approximately 1800 different steel alloys, and approximately 1100 different welding electrodes/wires based on the classification system of the American Welding Society.  The software leads the user through a series of questions, which are selected based on the answers to previous questions, to help an inexperienced (and even expert) welding engineer determine the welding consumables to be used for a specific weld.  Information about the software development is documented in the following reference.  The software was sold by the American Welding Society through their technical publications department for over 10 years.

J. E. Jones and D. L. Olson, "Selecting Arc Welding Processes", Chemical Engineering 93, Part 1: (5), pp. 117 121 (March 3, 1986), and Part 2: (6) pp. 131 134 (March 31, 1986)
