Velma gets off to a bad start in 1st grade because her teachers only remember her older 2 sisters’ names and how wonderful they were.  She overcompensates by becoming the worst at the very things her sisters did best, like running, singing, and math.  She ends up in the principal’s office but at least she gets noticed.  One day there’s a lesson about butterflies. Velma loves science and so she researches butterflies on her own.  She learns that there are 20,000 different kinds, some with strange names, like painted lady and frosted flasher.  Monarchs migrate to Mexico to stay warm.  So does her family.  On a school trip to the conservatory, a monarch lights on her fingertip and continues to accompany her everywhere… ballet, gym class, bed, even her next visit to the principal’s office.  But oh joy, she is popular now with the kids!  She takes the clinging butterfly outside.  It’s time.  They all watch it migrate with its many butterfly friends to Mexico.
