"The Heavens were Walled In" contains the very rare memoirs and reflections of an only 16 year old Jewish youngster from Transylvania that was deported with his family and many other Jews of his town to KL Auschwitz-Birkenau around Pesach 1944 to be selected there for a transit through the manmade hell of KL Gusen II - the most murderous work- and death camp of the former KL Mauthausen-Gusen complex where thousands of Jews had a survival chance of only 10 percent when building and running one of the most modern and most secret underground plants of Nazi Germany.
This is what makes these memoirs that valuable. Joseph Fisher did not write about a common Nazi concentration camp. He mainly wrote about the unbelievable conditions in a death camp that seems to have been one of the most dreadful in the Third Reich in terms of cruelty and inhumanity.
This is the reason why Joseph Fisher was never strong enough during his lifetime to speak to his family about his ordeal at that Jew Camp Gusen II and his death march to Camp Gunskirchen at the end of World War II that topped his 10 months in Gusen II and the huge "Bergkristall" underground plant at St. Georgen/Gusen, Austria.
He only passed his experiences to his family in his last will and testament, and the Fisher family from Israel now shares this outstanding reminder on thousands of forgotten victims of the Shoah with an interested worldwide community.
Therefore, the book is written in English and German, and the memoirs of Joseph Fisher are printed in the Hebrew original. To complement these very important and very personal memoirs, Mr. Rudolf A. Haunschmied - founding member of the Gusen Memorial Committee (www.gusen.org) - provided the historical context of the former Jew Camp Gusen II concise and well founded.
Thus this volume can be considered today to be the most important volume on this forgotten Jew camp of the former Mauthausen-Gusen complex and one of the final acts of the Shoah in Austria when thousands of further Jews were "evacuated" in 1945 form complexes like KL Auschwitz or KL Plaszow to KL Gusen II that, other than KL Mauthausen, had direct rail connection.
It also supplements the 2011 award winning movie "Six Million and One" by son David Fisher that reflects the discussions provoked by this precious memoirs in the Israeli family of Joseph Fisher.
All Jewish families that mourn relatives at Auschwitz, Mauthausen-Gusen or Gunskirchen should read this teary and outstanding new remembrance book.
