On August 28, 1948, some peasant women with firewood on their backs were descending a steep path above the Greek village of Lia. Eleni Gatzoyiannis was arrested, tortured and shot. Her crime had been to help her children escape the Communist guerillas during the Greek Civil War. This is her story, written by her son.
