Swashbuckling Steampunk fun

Now, I am not a comic reviewer. There is an entire sub-genre of art experts and lovers of the medium who are immersed in this world. Please take this as a review from a neophyte librarian--certainly an enthusiast, but not an expert.
This series is a fabulous addition to the steampunk oeuvre. The work was originally written in French by French writer Alice Alex, and has a lovely international flavor. There are slight idiosyncrasies in the translation (especially when the characters are upset and shouting at each other). Not inaccuracies, certainly, but entertaining colour that wouldn’t be found otherwise.
Because of the time period that inspired it, the politics of empire are an uncomfortable reality that ought to be acknowledged whenever steampunk is written. This author makes the refreshing choice of making it a major plot point. In other words, this isn't just corsets and goggles, it is an acknowledgment of the time period.
The characters are entertaining and boldly created, with definite personality. The villains are villainous, the heroes are heroic (if sometimes clumsy or naïve).
All in all, a good read.
