I'm obsessed with early Beatles history and time-travel/alternate-reality tales, and this is one of my favorite books. It's been in print for more than six years now, and I'm amazed at how little attention it has received. Apparently it hasn't been promoted at all, which is a shame, because there are folks who would really enjoy it.

One person who did review it, to his credit, is Spencer Leigh, author of Let's Go Down the Cavern and many other Merseybeat books. Leigh considered Beatle Pete, Time Traveller "remarkable" and "a welcome addition to Beatle research," but because he was primarily interested in its facts and not the time-travel aspects, Leigh also found it peculiar and "difficult to recommend." (How can a "remarkable book" be "difficult to recommend?") He felt that the author should have "ditched his fantasies" and written a straight, chronological narrative. But why should anyone ditch their fantasies? Would there even have been a Beatles if John Lennon and Paul McCartney had ditched their fantasies?

In any event, I'm glad that I discovered this book, because it manages to weave the particulars of Pete Best's strange journey through life in a unique, fascinating way.
