Abstract:

This work directs its efforts in the study of the house for Edith Farnsworth, an archetype of the best modern architecture designed by the German architect Mies Van der Rohe in the middle of the 20th century. The analysis is developed by tracing -from the project schemes to the construction of the house- a series of architectural operations that the architect used to achieve this sublime building. Mies van der Rohe, keen reader and student of philosophy, proposes through his work, transpose a series of philosophical notions to architectural operations, for this he uses the Baukunst, a principle that corresponds to the amalgamation of two German words or terms that in turn they comprise two spheres of human activity, getting a new notion. Mies transcends the simple "construction" (Bau) and elevates it to the spheres of "art" (Kunst) to get a building that represents the "spirit" of his time.
