Pastoral theologians and caregivers have attempted to find out pastoral, theological, and professional identities appropriate to their faith traditions and communities, while working with careseekers and supervisees in an interdisciplinary and multicultural context. In the process of finding proper identities pastoral theologians have sharpened their methodology of constructing pastoral theology by interweaving lived experience with pastoral practice, pastoral action with reflection, and theological wisdom with cultural perspectives. This article addresses historical lessons and implications for future directions.
