Alexandra Perisic's investigation of politically charged contemporary novels provides an important resource for students and teachers of The Global South, Neoliberalism, Postmodernism, and Transatlantic Crossings. This insightful and imaginative scholarly book explores the relationships between the colonizer and the colonized through the eyes of poets and novelists who write about labor, debt, and environmental crises. Authors include Fatou Diome, Marie Ndiaye, Giannina Braschi, Roberto Bolano, and Caryl Phillips. The chapters "Indebted Immigrant" on French Senegalese author Fatou Diome and "Atlantic Undercommons" on United States of Banana by Puerto Rican author Giannina Braschi are especially lucid and poignant on the subjects of immigrant debt and mass incarceration under Neoliberalism.
