This paper formulated a new, useful, productive, fundamental concept of ecosystem’s biomachinery. Biomachinery is a new scientific term that was proposed by the author, Dr. Sergei A. Ostroumov. Biomachinery means ecological mechanisms that include biological communities and biodiversity, it is a complex system of the natural ecological mechanisms which improve water quality.
The innovative experimental data analysis, concepts, and generalizations in this article provide the fundamental elements of the new qualitative theory of biocontrol (biocontrol here means biological regulation and improvement) of water quality in a systematized form. The theory covers water self-purification in freshwater and marine ecosystems. The theory is supported by the results of the author’s experimental studies.
His experiments discovered new biological effects exerted by some chemical pollutants on aquatic organisms. The chemical pollutants that he tested were synthetic surfactants, detergents, and other xenobiotics.
The new fundamental concepts that he developed have a serious potential for useful applications. On the basis of his theory, new steps will be taken for remediation of polluted aquatic ecosystems including purification of water bodies and streams.
The bottom line: this paper briefly presents a new productive theory of the water self-purification mechanism of aquatic ecosystems, the theory which will be useful to develop phytoremediation and other types of technologies to improve water quality.
